The plans call for the steps to be made from a single piece of .040 aluminum. That seemed kind of flimsy to me, (not to mention kind of difficult to bend such a big piece of metal). So, I made my steps in two pieces, and riveted them together. The lines of rivets are what forced me to cut those notches in the flanges that are welded to the gear legs. They wouldn't have fit otherwise. Also, I primed the inside of the steps because I wasn't confident I would be able to reach all the way in there with paint when the time came. Even with the two pieces, they are still a little flimsy. I'd probably make them out of thicker metal if I had to do them over.

Total Time: 19.0 hrs.
