Gear Legs

Although I tried several times, I just could not get my landing gear ends to look like the ones in the plans. Part of the problem is that my front brackets are too close together. (See this page for an explanation why.) After talking with the designer, he said it would be okay to use 1 inch x 0.049 tubing instead of the 1-1/4 x 0.035 tubing. This not only makes it easier to fit into my brackets, but it is also easier to weld because the walls are not so thin. (He also said that he was going to change the plans to use this size tubing in the future!)

Next, after talking with my tech counselor, we came up with this idea: Start with a piece of tubing 1-1/2 inches long, and cut it apart at an angle so that it's narrower at one end than at the other when put back together again. (1/2 inch at the top and 1 inch at the bottom.)

Then mount the 1/2 inch tubing to the top of that.

Update: CAUTION!!! The plans specify 1/2 x .058 tubing be welded onto the ends of the gear legs, with 3/8 x .058 bushings inside of them. This will allow the use of AN4 hardware to attach the gear legs to the fuselage. However, the plans say to use AN5 hardware for attaching the landing gear to the fuselage. A call to the designer revealed that the preferred solution would have been to use larger (say, 7/16 x .058) bushings and larger (9/16 x .058) tubing ends to accomodate the larger hardware, but since mine were already welded, an acceptable alternative would be to use NAS6204 hardware.

Then mount that assembly to the gear leg at the proper angle.

Here it is all welded and trimmed. (It's still missing the
reinforcement "strap" that goes around the whole thing.)

Then mount the legs to the fuselage, and join them at the bottom, again making sure the angle is correct. (The plans show the rear legs coming straight down, but I think that would put the main wheels too far aft, so I moved them forward about 7 inches.)
