Windshield Frame Pieces

I'm going to try to teach myself how to weld. These are the "spools" that go through the firewall and connect to the windshield frame. I tack-welded them using MIG. My EAA chapter president is an expert welder. He finish-welded them using TIG. Since TIG welders are fairly expensive, and not something that I'm ready to shell out $2,000 for, I found a place that would rent them to me for $10 a day. These finished "spools" are going to be my benchmark. If I can get myself to the point where my welds come out like this (or better), then I'll be satisfied.
